1976-81: The Relationship Continued
1976-77, when I was 10-11 years old, my house caught fire. It was around 12.00 p.m. in the afternoon. Only me, my youngest brother and my mum were at home. My maid ran into the house shouting at my mum; "Your bedroom is on fire!". My mum quickly ran up the stairs, opened the bedroom's door, and I saw fire and smoke bursting out from the room. Mum realized nothing she could do except to grab my youngest brother and brought us out from the house. Outside the house, I saw thick smoke flying up the sky, and fire quickly swallowed our house. Finally the fire brigade arrived. They were able to put off the fire, but it was too late, our house was completely gone. We were shocked and scared. I believe the one who was most hurt and sad was my dad. I prayed to God; "Please help!" Our whole family temporarily clamped in the extension at the back of the house. It was not properly sheltered and secured. One night, when all of us were sleeping, the place was burglarized. All my savings in a wooden box were stolen. We continued to stay in the back extension, until the reconstruction of our house was completed. 1978-79, when I was 12-13 years old, me and my fourth brother joint the swimming training session in a club in Tanjung Bungah. Dad used to bring us to the club almost every morning at 6.30 a.m. For the afternoon training at 4.30 p.m., we went there by ourselves, sometimes by bus and usually we cycled. That was the time when we came to know lots of friends. I did well in school, and I was accepted by Chung Ling High School, one of the best high schools in Penang. I did quite well in Chung Ling and was quite active in the school's swimming and water polo team. I scored four A's in the form three government exam. Dad was really happy. So, he decided to send me to study in Singapore as he felt that it would be better prospect for me to study in English stream.
