1984: Kuala Lumpur
In April 1994, I was enrolled in Taylor's College, for a special course that would allow me to sit for the Matriculation exam in October on the same year. The normal course consisted of three semesters within a year, but I missed the first semester due to my late enrolment. So the course was squeezed into two semesters. Because of that, I had to study really hard to catch up. In Kuala Lumpur, I shared a room with an old high school friend of mine, in a terrace house in Petaling Jaya. Our room was without furniture, only cheap mattresses we bought in the pasar malam, and a study table we rented from the house owner. In July 1984, I had to make the important decision of my life; my preference course in university. I really had no idea, except to turn to my dad. My dad was a building contractor and a property developer at that time, without much hesitation, he advised me to take architecture. I knew architecture would be a six-year course, but I decided to take the challenge to please my dad. I did the Matriculation exam quite well, and I was accepted by the architecture faculty in the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Much to my delight, I also received offers from MIT and Havard University in the US, which had applied for with my 'O' level results.
