The Greatest Commandment

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Loving God is termed the greatest commandment. Why so?

Our sufferings in life are caused by the evil inside us, i.e. greed, hate, lust, jealousy, etc. The evil can never be satisfied, because it keeps on growing. Loving God is the exact opposite of evil, it makes us hate evil. If we truely love God, naturally we can get rid of the evil inside us, and hence makes us a much happier person.

Once the evil inside us is reduced (assume total elimination is impossible), and with the help of the Holy Spirit, our heart can be filled with God's love. Then we can extend this love to all the people around us, which is the 2nd greatest commandment - love your neighbor. Imagine a heart with no evil but only filled with love, how sweet would that be.

When we finally meet God in heaven, loving him makes us want to submit ourselves to him, we will praise him, worship him enternally, and we will never rebel against him - which in my belief, is the principle to make a perfect heaven. Now, we can understand why loving God is termed the greatest commandment.

So, how do we love God? It's easy. First, you need to believe in Christ as your savior. Then, you just dedicate your life to God. Pray to him always in whatever you do in life. Trust him and leave everything to him, God will make you love him..... because he wants to be loved.
